A Life That Changed Everything

Abby’s story is not just about a dog—it’s about love, healing, and a promise that continues to live on today.

In 2008, after losing two beloved dogs—Mutt-Mutt and Chewy—life felt empty and overwhelming. The grief was deep, and every day felt heavier than the last. Shortly after Chewy passed, Abby was adopted from a humane society in Hollywood, Florida.

She was a Labrador Retriever, and she would change everything.

Finding Abby

Abby became the third dog adopted from the same shelter over the years, but she was different from the start. She arrived at exactly the right time—not to replace what was lost, but to help heal a broken heart.

She quickly became more than a pet. She became family, comfort, and purpose during one of the most difficult times in life.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Companion

For the next 15 years, Abby and her human were inseparable.

She was:

  • A best friend

  • A protector

  • A source of unconditional love

  • A constant companion through every season of life

Abby loved everyone she met—people and animals alike. She had a gentle nature and a calm presence that made others feel safe.

She especially loved car rides, long trips, and visiting dog parks across Florida. One of her favorite destinations was the Florida Keys, where she and her human traveled together many times.

Her Special Gift

Abby had a rare and beautiful connection with animals.

While living in South Florida, she spent time around a large population of stray and feral cats. Most of these cats were not socialized and kept their distance from people.

But something incredible happened when Abby was around.

The cats followed her.

Even those who would not allow humans near them were drawn to Abby’s calm and loving presence. She had a natural ability to bring peace to animals who had known very little kindness.

Over time, Abby helped save seven kittens, all of whom were adopted into loving homes. One remained and still lives with her family today.

A Life of Love and Loyalty

Abby was more than intelligent or well-behaved—she was deeply compassionate. She had no aggression, no fear of other animals, and no hesitation in showing love.

She became a symbol of:

  • Trust

  • Gentleness

  • Loyalty

  • Unconditional love

She was truly one of a kind.

The Hardest Goodbye

In her later years, Abby developed severe arthritis in all four legs. Despite care and effort, her condition worsened. Eventually, she was also diagnosed with cancer.

By March 6, 2023, she could no longer walk or lift her head. She needed to be carried outside multiple times a day just to go potty. Her quality of life had declined, and the most difficult decision had to be made.

That day, Abby crossed the rainbow bridge.

It was described as the hardest day of her family’s life.

Grief That Never Fully Leaves

Even after her passing, Abby’s presence is still deeply felt.

She was not just a pet for 15 years—she was a soul companion. The grief did not end with time. Even years later, her memory continues to bring both tears and gratitude.

A Promise Made

While caring for Abby, something became clear.

There were over 100 stray and feral cats living in the area, many dependent on daily feeding and care. Most of the people helping them were doing so out of their own pockets, without enough support or resources.

Abby’s gentle connection with these animals inspired a promise:

To honor her life by helping those animals she loved so deeply.

The Beginning of Abby’s Wish

In August 2023, that promise became reality.

Abby’s Wish was founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to continue her legacy.

Its mission is to:

  • Feed stray and feral cats and dogs

  • Support caretakers and feeders

  • Help fund spay and neuter programs

  • Reduce suffering through compassion and action

Today, over 200 cats and several dogs are fed and cared for with the help of this mission.

Her Legacy Lives On

Abby’s life was a gift, but her legacy is even greater.

Every animal fed, every life saved, and every act of kindness done through Abby’s Wish is part of her continuing story.

She may no longer be here physically, but her spirit lives on in every animal helped in her name.

Forever Abby

Abby taught one simple truth:

Love given freely can change lives—not just for people, but for animals too.

Her story continues every day through the mission that bears her name.

Abby’s Wish exists because of her.
